On September 12th, PRI-ME investigated Wallingford Farm in Kennebunk, Maine. The hall and barns were built in 1804 for George and Abigail Wallingford. George was the son of a man named Samuel Wallingford, who was the first Marine to reside in the United States. George Wallingford played a significant role in helping to get Maine admitted as one of the 50 states. One of the founding fathers of the town of Kennebunk, he also was elected as the first moderator of the town and was on the committee for Maine statehood.
Some of the reports that come from Wallingford farm include slamming doors, hearing someone run or walk up and down the staircase in the foyer, apparitions of soldiers walking on the beams in the barn and cold spots. We had also been told that a shadowy figure had been seen both in the foyer and adjoining hallway.

We attempted to seek out a plausible explanation for the figure that had been seen. The only possible explanation that we could come up with was dependant on the position of the sun and time of day the sun coming through the windows could cast a shadow on someone who was walking through the foyer; their shadow may appear on the wall by the staircase. However, we were not there while the sun was out, so we were not able to actually re-create this. Also, it would be easy for the person whose shadow was being cast to recognize the play on light and dismiss it themselves.
We did temperature readings throughout the house and barn. Because of the age of the house, the temperature fluctuated quite a bit from room to room. In our opinion, it would be very easy to mistake a draft as a cold spot in many of the rooms of the house.
During our investigation we had a stationary voice recorder turn completely off while we were away. Also, a flashlight that was located in the office somehow turned on and moved to the sitting room at the front of the house. None of the members had touched this flashlight during the investigation; it belonged to the Wallingford Farm staff.

We also captured a picture which was unexplainable. While we were in the middle section that separates the barn from the house, Jen snapped a shot of what looked like a flashlight beam on the wall. Only one team member had their flashlight on at this point and she was not pointing it anywhere near the area that the picture was taken. When we spoke to the owner at the reveal about this, he told us that when the house was abandoned, the police had been called because people in the area thought that someone had snuck in. They claimed that they could see their flashlight beam on the third floor, however, upon examination, the house was found to be empty.

Upon review of our audio data, we found that we had captured a few EVP’s. One was very clear and distinct. During an EVP session that we had conducted, one of the team members had asked if anyone there was aware that we now had an African-American President. Almost right after, a very clear voice can be heard, saying “no way!” We also have many more interesting EVP’s that we were able to catch during our time there, please feel free to check them out!

While we were not able to accurately re-create or debunk any of the previous claims, the EVP’s and photographic evidence we got did not clearly indicate whether Wallingford Farm contains a residual or an intelligent haunting. It is our opinion that there is definitely something paranormal that dwells on the residence, but we would need to conduct further research in order to come to a more solid conclusion as to what type of haunting exists. It is a very beautiful place, with a store that holds many nice, locally made products. It is definitely worth going there to check out the store and grounds; we look forward to returning for future investigations!
